Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
We strive for everyone to feel welcomed, valued, respected, and heard.
Increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) is the right thing to do, both for NI and society. Our teams should reflect the diversity of our customers and the communities where we live and work. Collaborating with people from different backgrounds opens our minds and spurs innovation. And when everyone has equitable access to opportunities and feels a sense of belonging, that gives us the security to do our best work together.
Our 2030 DEIB Goals
We’ve set moonshot goals for our company’s workforce to reflect global gender and U.S. racial demographics by 2030. We set them to challenge ourselves to work toward what is needed – not just what is easily achievable. In full transparency, we are far from our targets today. Because we are focused not on quick fixes but on building the infrastructure and culture needed for lasting change, we expect initial progress to be slow and then accelerate over time.
2022 Status: DEIB Moonshot Goals
of our global workforce is women (Goal: 50% by 2030)
of our U.S. workforce is Black (Goal: 13% by 2030)
of our U.S. workforce is Latinx (Goal: 18% by 2030)
of our people managers globally are women (Goal: 50% by 2030)
of our U.S. people managers are people of color (Goal: 40% by 2030)
Building a Beloved Community
Martin Luther King Jr. wrote that, “Our goal is to create a beloved community, and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.” We are committed to building a beloved community at NI.
The DEIB issues in the technology and engineering industries reflect historical inequities in society, education, and business. Our approach is to acknowledge these inequities and rectify them by strengthening our inclusive hiring practices and culture, and by developing the infrastructure and strategies needed for deep, lasting change.
Our work includes:
- Facilitating personalized antiracism and inclusion work with NI executives
- Holding Leading Inclusion conversation series for all global employees
- Analyzing talent acquisition, development, retention, and compensation data
- Strengthening and deepening inclusive hiring, training, and promotion practices
- Expanding inclusion resource groups globally
- Training employees to effectively collaborate across countries and cultures
- Launching apprenticeship and internship programs
of our employees feel a sense of belonging at NI. (Goal: 87% each year through 2030)
Spotlights: DEIB Initiatives
Generation NI
In 2022, 217 entry-level employees from 14 countries entered Generation NI, our program that helps new graduates launch their technology careers. It starts with DEIB-focused recruitment and then provides a collaborative, structured onboarding and skill development experience.
Apprenticeships and Internships
Through our apprenticeship and internship programs, NI is helping talented people of all ages and backgrounds to build the skills they need for engineering careers. In 2022, we hosted apprentices and interns from Austin Community College, AUTMHQ and Code2College.
Leading Inclusion
More than 75% of NI employees have completed our Leading Inclusion conversation series, which engages our global teams in discussions about topics such as psychological safety, belonging and inclusion.
Inclusion Resource Groups
In 2022, we expanded our Inclusion Resource Groups to more NI sites globally. More than 1,050 employees belong to our seven IRGs, which unite members around shared backgrounds, experiences, and interests.
