Sustainable Operations
We are committed to climate neutrality.
Engineers are problem-solvers, and the climate crisis is the most urgent problem of our time. We are committed to taking bold action, both to safeguard life on Earth and to secure the financial sustainability of our company.
The science makes it clear that the world needs to reach net-zero emissions by mid-century to avoid the worst results of climate change. Following this science, in 2022 we created a climate strategy and set a new climate neutrality goal.
Reducing Emissions
Our ambition is to operate in a way that produces no net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We will achieve this by reducing our own Scope 1 and 2 emissions to the maximum extent possible and then neutralize the remainder via certified nature-based offsets. We also recognize the importance of addressing our Scope 3 emissions, and we are committed to identifying the best ways for us to reduce these emissions throughout our value chain, with special attention on reducing the energy consumption of our products, which will also benefit our customers.
We reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 5 % from 2021 to 2022 and sourced 35% from renewables.
By 2030, NI will become a climate-neutral company with an ongoing commitment to protecting biodiversity each year.

Green Building
One of the ways we reduce our emissions is through our commitment to design 100% of NI’s new buildings and remodels to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and WELL standards each year through 2030.
Zero Waste
We are working toward achieving Zero Waste at NI-owned buildings and reduce waste at leased facilities by 2030. Zero Waste means diverting at least 90% of solid nonhazardous waste from the landfill through reusing, recycling, and composting materials at our owned facilities.
Protecting Biodiversity
When we build new facilities or remodel existing facilities, we take great care to protect local habitats. More than 60% of our Austin campus continues to be in its original, natural state with a healthy functioning ecosystem that is home to native wildlife species including deer, foxes, and herons.
Employee Action
Through our Healthy Planet Group, employees organize campaigns and events to foster environmental stewardship at NI. In 2022, the group educated Austin employees about the campus’s new centralized waste collection system and held litter cleanups and waste takeback drives during Earth Week.
Spotlights on Environmental Action
Bandera Azul Ecológica
NI Costa Rica received its first Bandera Azul Ecológica award, which recognizes businesses committed to mitigating and adapting to climate change. The team’s 2022 activities included a beach cleanup, tree planting and employee education on reducing NI’s carbon footprint, water usage, and waste.
NI SWAG Takeback
For Earth Day 2022, NI Austin employees upcycled their old NI T-shirts into dog toys for local animal shelters. This was part of a global effort to reuse and recycle promotional products with our previous NI logo. We’ve kept our new branded product suite small and as sustainable as possible.
Austin Headquarters Remodel
Our renovation of NI's Austin headquarters is an example of how our Corporate Impact goals worth together. The remodeled spaces are designed to LEED and WELL standards. We used employee input, testing, and feedback to ensure they support our hybrid work model, with flexible areas for communal and solo work.
NI Munich Energy Savings
NI Munich reduced energy consumption at its test lab and engineering office spaces by 80 percent in 2022. The team set up a process that results in technical equipment only running when required. The annual 87,500 kWh reduction is equivalent to the energy consumption of about 22 German households.
